Squarebill Crankbait

A squarebill crankbait is one of my favorite lures to throw in the spring or fall when the fish are up shallow. Generally speaking I look for a bank with a harder bottom (eg. chunk rock or rip rap) and then cast it out as far as I can and let it bang on the bottom while I lure it back in. You could also use one in an area where it doesn’t make contact with the bottom and use a stop and go retrieve, but for the most part I use this bait near the shore when there are shad around that the bass are feeding on. I typically prefer heavier lures (eg. 1/2 or 5/8oz) since I usually throw these on a casting rod, and as far as colors go I like to go with a translucent color, a solid shad color, and possible a chrome bait if the conditions warrant throwing one.

I also like to use a moderate fast action rod with this type of lure, and as I’ve mentioned on other lure pages, I usually like to swap out the treble with inline single hooks so if you are wondering why the lure in that picture doesn’t have treble hooks that would be why.
