A shakey head is one of my favorite lures to throw, and it can do very well when the bass are on bottom and you are targeting a specific area like a rock pile. I also prefer it to a ned rig, and if I want to throw something like a ned rig I’ll use the same jighead but switch to a 4″ worm instead of a standard 6″ straight tail worm. Speaking of worms, I also highly recommend going with an elaztech lure since they stand up when they are on the bottom. The elaztech can be tricky to get on the jighead, but there aren’t many other options out there that will stand up the way these do. Another thing that’s nice about the Owner Shakey Ultrahead is it comes with a centering pin, so what you can do is puncture the worm with the hook first and then put the centering pin into the hole you punched into it and then screw it onto the jighead. It still takes a little effort to do this, but once it’s done you will be left with a lure that isn’t going anywhere and will last you through several fish.
In terms of lures my favorites are the Z-Man SMH Worm if I want to go with a larger worm, or the Z-Man Hula StickZ if I want to use something that looks more like a ned rig. For colors I usually go with green pumpkin, or black and blue flake with the Hula StickZ. For the SMH Worm they have a color called purple rain that I like if the visibility is lower, and if the water is clearer I’ll usually go with plum or green pumpkin. For the jighead I highly recommend the Owner Shakey Ultrahead, and would not recommend anything else for these lures since I prefer a screwlock and it can be very hard to get the lure on a jighead with a screwlock that doesn’t have the centering pin that this one has.
