Ok to be fair jigs are one of my favorite lures and I’ve caught some of my biggest bass on a jig, so I’m probably a little bit biased but today I was thinking about which rods to take with me and one of the first ones that came to mind was the rod that I use for smaller texas rigs. It’s August which can be a tough month if you are somewhere where it’s really hot, but a texas rig is one of the lures that continues to produce for me so I figured throwing one might be a good idea. Then I started thinking about what else I could take with me that would work with that setup and realized that a 3/8oz jig also works really well on that setup and then it sort of dawned on me that I haven’t thrown a jig enough lately.
So with that I’m going to try throwing a jig. It’s hot out and so I probably won’t be getting as many bites anyway, but slowly crawling or hopping a smaller jig on the bottom can still work when it’s hot and the fish are lethargic, and the good news with a jig is that if you do happen to get a bite there’s a good chance the fish will be a little larger than average.
I also thought I’d take a minute and mention the brand of jig I’ll be using. I recently discovered a smaller lure company called Siebert Outdoors and decided to try out a few of their products. I’m really glad that I did and will be picking some more up at some point, but one of their lures that I’ve been the most impressed with has been their line of jigs. Here’s a few of the ones that I purchased recently:
If you’re interested the one on the left is their crawdad color and the ones in the pack on the right are in their swamp monster color which is sort of a black and blue / green pumpkin combination. I really like their tungsten pitching jigs, but they also make great grass jigs and brush jigs. Generally speaking if you are going to be buying a jig I’d suggest looking for one that is powder coated (so it doesn’t chip easily) and make sure it’s got a good hook and tie on it. These fit the bill, and they also have a ton of colors available and their service has been really good.
But back to why I’m tying one of these on right now…it’s hot and the fish are probably going to be a little more lethargic than usual which means the bite is probably going to be a little slower than usual. When it gets like that one of my favorite lures to grab is a drop shot, but if I get bored of that or want to try and target larger fish I’m probably going to be picking up a jig. Maybe it will work and maybe it won’t and I’ll end up swapping back to the drop shot, but I’d rather try going for a big one and as Wayne Gretzky once said “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.
