We’re deep into drop shot season at this point (for me at least) and one of my favorite lures to use on a drop shot is a 6″ Roboworm Straight Tail Worm. There are a few different worms that I like to use on a drop shot (as well as a couple of other lures), but if I’m at a small grassy pond that gets a lot of pressure one of the most effective lures that I’ve found is a 6″ Roboworm. Having said that they come in so many colors that it might feel a little bit intimidating to try and figure out which ones are going to work for you so I decided to write a post about which colors I use and why.
To start out I will say that generally speaking the three colors that I like to use for soft plastic worms are red, green, and purple. However, that’s when I’m on a big lake that usually has a rocky bottom and if I’m at a pond things are a little bit different because it’s smaller (so you don’t need as much drawing power) and there’s usually a lot of grass around so I don’t necessarily like green colored worms since they don’t really offer much in terms of contrast with the surroundings. That’s not to say that you still can’t catch them on a green lure and there’s plenty of people that catch bass all day with a green pumpkin senko, but in my case when it comes to Roboworms I’m usually throwing them at small ponds and as a result I’ve personally landed on three colors that I like to use on a regular basis and none of them happen to be green.
If you go to Tackle Warehouse right now and look up the 6″ Straight Tail Roboworm you will see there are over 50 colors available (at least as of the date this article was written). That’s a lot of colors to try out and trying them all might get a little expensive, but on the other hand one of the best things about bass fishing is trying out new lures and so I’d argue you should at least try out a few of them on your own. In fact even though I’ve got three colors that I use on a regular basis I’ve actually got a few more than that hanging on my lure wall right now:
You will also find that other colors certainly work, and as an example even though you won’t see Morning Dawn listed as one of my top three there are plenty of people that swear by that color and I’m pretty sure you will do alright if you decide to pick some of those up. That said let’s get into the three colors I like.
The first color I like is called Oxblood Red Flake. This is a very natural looking color but it also has a slight streak of purple in it as well as some shiny red flakes. If the water is clear and the visibility is high I highly recommend this one. There’s also some other colors that are similar (eg. Oxblood Light Red Flake) but I personally like this color over any of the other ones that look similar to it.
The second color that I really like is called Tequilla Sunrise. This is a good ‘middle of the road’ color to use if the water is a little stained or if it’s a little cloudy and the water is a little stained but not necessarily what I would consider very stained. It’s sort of a cross between purple and red and truth be told I only grabbed this one initially because it was available locally and I needed some more but it has since turned out to be one of my favorite colors.
The third color that I would recommend you look into is called Margarita Mutilator. This one is purple and it’s darker so it does well when the water is stained and the visibility is lower. They also make a newer color called M.M.III that looks extremely similar (and you can guess what the M’s stand for) but I guess I’m old fashioned as I still prefer the original.
And that’s actually it in terms of the colors that I would say that I use and buy on a regular basis. I still love this lure and so I do end up trying out new colors periodically and I suppose at some point one of these colors might even get replaced, but even if that happens I can tell you that I am relatively sure that you will at least get some bites if you go with any of these colors, so if you happen to be looking into this lure and aren’t sure which colors to go with I’d suggest picking one or more from this list.
