Strike King KVD Dream Shot Review

Late summer can be tough for bass fishing especially when the weather is sunny and the water is dirty. As fate would have it I found myself fishing in these conditions earlier this week and so I decided I would bring my drop shot rod with me since I knew it probably wasn’t going to be easy to catch fish. Normally when I throw a drop shot I’ll use a straight tail worm or sometimes I’ll use a lure that imitates a small baitfish which is what this lure was made to do. In this case I was running low on worms and so I decided to try out the Strike King KVD Dream Shot, which is a lure that I’ve had for a while but just haven’t gotten around to using.

To make a long story short I’m really glad I tried out this lure and have decided to add it to my permanent arsenal (specifically as a drop shot lure to imitate bluegill). This lure reminds me a lot of the Roboworm (which is another one of the main lures that I throw on a drop shot) and in this case I ended up switching back and forth between this lure (in the triple magic color pictured above) and a margarita mutilator Roboworm. The reason I like to keep a lure that imitates a worm and another lure that imitates a baitfish like a bluegill handy when I’m throwing a drop shot is there have been days when it seems like the bass prefer one type of lure over the other, however this was not one of those days. In this case both lures ended up getting bit, and I didn’t notice much of a difference in terms of the amount of bites I was getting on either one. I still prefer the 4″ NetBait BaitFuel Twitch as a baitfish lure if I’m throwing a drop shot and trying to imitate a shad, but for imitating bluegill the fact that this thing held up consistently with the Roboworm was enough to get me to add it to my rotation.

This lure was actually designed by Kevin VanDam a while ago, and for those of you who don’t know who that is he’s currently the all-time money winner in professional bass fishing. As it turns out it seems like he might also know a thing or two about designing a drop shot lure. One of the things I like the most about this lure, and something that sets it apart from some other drop shot lures that are on the market is it has a unique shape that includes a very wide flat bottom, which helps keep in horizontal while you are fishing it. It also comes in a lot of great colors but I specifically found myself drawn to the ones that I’d use to imitate a bluegill. It’s also not terribly expensive, and there are times when it will go on sale at my local tackle shop which makes it a great value. This lure has also been out for a while and while I suspect it was probably very popular early on, I don’t see as many people talking about it or using it these days which is great news for anyone that is using it as that means there’s a good chance you will be throwing something the bass haven’t already seen and gotten used to. Long story short, if you are in the market for a lure to use on a drop shot that will imitate a bait fish, I would completely recommend trying this one out and am willing to bet that you will be glad that you did.
