A large texas rigged worm can be a good lure to go with when you aren’t sure where the fish are in the water column, and one of the main benefits to this presentation is you can swim it or you can bounce it or drag it on the bottom. If I know I want to swim a worm or if the visibility is a little lower I’ll usually go with a Zoom Magnum Ultravibe Speed Worm. On the other hand if I’m not sure where the fish are and want to go back and forth between swimming the worm or bouncing it along the bottom, I’ll usually go with a Zoom Ol’ Monster. Both of these worms can be used with the same size hook so you can also swap them out easily or even move to a large craw lure if you know they are on the bottom and think a crawdad presentation might do better.
A large worm can be thrown can be thrown just about any time of the year, but it seems to do best in the summer months. Using one in spring and fall can also be useful if you are trying to figure out where the fish are and there is some cover around. In terms of lures I like the Zoom baits I mentioned earlier, and for colors I like to go with red bug, junebug red and green pumpkin magic for the Ol’ Monster, while red bug, junebug red and sungill are my preferred colors for the Magnum Ultravibe Speed Worm.
